​​​ELLA JANE NEW is a theatre and film director based in New York City. Born in Barbados and raised in Uganda, Kenya and England, Ella is frequently found pouring over pages of a new play or in a rehearsal room of an Off-Broadway theatre working on plays that often explore cultural power dynamics and familial tensions. Her work as a resident director and head of the playwriting lab at Chain Theatre since 2019 has included the critically acclaimed NYTimes Critics Pick macbitches; the play development & workshop of Queen Z by Michael A. Jones (starring Kara Young/Lucille Lortel nominee) and the development of What Passes For Comedy by G.D Kimble.

Ella’s recent theatre directing credits include Humpty Dumpty by Eric Bogosian (Chain Theatre mainstage); Daughter of the Wicked at New York City Center; Falling In Love With Mr Dellamort, with Tony/Emmy winning cast: James Monroe Iglehart, Lena Hall and Jackie Hoffman for Broadway Podcast Network; NYC Premiere of Six Corners by Emmy Nominated Keith Huff (House of Cards, Mad Men, American Crime); Jack Feldstein's Three Months With Pook at SOHO Playhouse; ; and World Premiere’s of Chasing The River by Jean Dobie Geibel and This God Damn House by Matthew Mclauglan at Chain Theatre.

Ella's film and audio directing credits include, ​Falling In Love With Mr Dellamort for Broadway Podcast Network (starring James Monroe Iglehart, Lena Hall and Jackie Hoffman); Creative Minds Fellow at Sundance Film Festival, for her short film Car Battery; and Women Make Movies Fellow for her film The Global Village Project.

Ella has written and directed short films, Sofie and Earth Beneath My Feet, winning Best Short at San Francisco Film Festival. Her web pilot Blind Date, co-written with Adrienne Lovette has been viewed 1M+ on YouTube.
